Joint Action with Occupy Federal Way and Tacoma on HR 347

Our joint action to visit and deliver a letter of our concerns went off without a hitch.  We started in front of Occupation Park and rode the light rail to 9th St. station and from there walked to Senator Patty Murray’s office. Upon arriving we noticed that her office was closed so we slipped a letter addressed to her under the door as well as a sign that was made illustrating our major concern of the bill, that being SPEECH and ASSEMBLY.

We proceeded down 11th St. to 6th district Rep. Norm Dicks’ office and were met by his Tacoma office aide and handed him the letter. We verbally expressed our concerns as well. At the same time we took an opportunity to extend our thanks for Norm’s 18 terms of service and we were told that they would forward a transmittal of the letter to Rep. Dicks.

Back on the light rail we headed to 9th district Rep. Adam Smith’s office and we were welcomed in to his office, offered a seat and had a nice lengthy discussion with Smith’s Community Outreach manager. She received our message and concerns warmly when we reminded her that other bills(NDAA and the FAA bill) contained vague language as well and we had concerns about our privacy and freedoms. She stated that Rep. Smith is co-sponsoring new language to amend NDAA that would be clear that US citizens can not be detained under NDAA.

We will give them two weeks to respond and then go back down and make ourselves known. We will hold them accountable.

Regards,
Members of Occupy Federal Way and Occupy Tacoma
